About US
And there came a day, unlike any other.
A crisis arose that no single “Comic Geek” could handle.
On that day…
Comic Book Classroom was born!
Comic Book Classroom is a nonprofit, free, after-school program for fifth through eighth grade students that teaches literacy and arts education through comic books. Comic Book Classroom uses a state standards-based curriculum and is dedicated to educating at-risk and under-served students through teaching the basics of the craft, starting with the elements of structure and storytelling. To graduate from the program, students apply this knowledge in creating their own comic book. Comic Book Classroom believes that a love of comics can foster a love of reading and learning.
Not-So-Secret Origin
Comic Book Classroom was created in order to reach out students who are not being served by traditional means of education. With comic books being underutilized in most academic environments, the founders of the CBC sought to create a curriculum that would bring students struggling with standard methods into the world of reading through a different method: sequential art. In 2010 the CBC began its first pilot program, earning rave reviews from students and faculty. By early 2011, the program had expanded past the projected goal of three additional pilot programs into a total of eight new classes, including one bilingual course.
